Good resource for emergency preparedness is  www.RedCross.org.  Red Cross is 125 year in American and 90th year in Glendale.  Always looking for locations to have meetings/training.  Blood services provide 400,000 pints of blood a year.  Always need more blood.  Disaster Services – Second CERT class in La Crescenta starts this Saturday.  Knowing what to do is very important: First Aid and CPR, CERT training.  One year ago country was responding to Katrina and Red Cross was involved and trained many volunteers.  Glendale Red Cross sent 80 people to location.  Respond to fires and provide cantina for fire personnel and help displaced people find shelter and other essential needs.  Teach water safety and life guarding.  Some training can be done primarily on-line.   Fritz Coleman comedy night is upcoming fundraising on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at Glendale Center Theatre.  Containers with emergency supplies are at CV High School.  Local website is www.ARCGlendale.org  Build an emergency preparedness kit and have a plan.  Red Cross sells 72 hour kits.  Check website. 

5. Comments from Officials

Monthly report of Crimes in August.  See attached report.  Rummage sale this Saturday.  Parking issue on Foothill – thy have been asked by Supervisor Antonovich and have now begun increasing patrol of parking on Foothill Blvd.  Sheriffs will be adding an additional early morning car which will also help with enforcement.  Larceny crimes have increased in area and vandalism.

Have been putting radar trailers near schools and will follow-up with radar enforcement.  For month of August there was 11 traffic collisions, three with injuries.  4 caused by unsafe speed.  Will be doing seatbelt enforcement and Sobriety check points in the future.  (626) 296-8100 ext. 247

Stephanie English is LA County Fire Department community services representative.  She handles interaction with public and community groups.  Chief Gil has been working on local fires--Day and Pine fires and gave update.  Pine fire is only 6 miles from this area, as the crow flies, but they hope to knock it out in the morning as Santa Ana winds are forecast for this weekend.  

He personally does not foresee a rapid increase in rates in the near future.  CVWD is working with City of Glendale as they are adding pumps to compete for Verdugo Wash water.  This should not be a problem.  Colorado River Tour is coming up on October 27-29.  Awarded contract for pipeline replacement at 3400 Maryann, Community, Prospect and New York Aves.  These will start next week.  CVWD had to discontinue one of their wells due to detected MTBE.  Looking into detection of source(s) and possible removal.  Pickens tunnel is in need of repair and they are working on adding it back into service.      

Country Fair was a success.  5K Run/Walk coming on Oct. 14, 2006 at 2 Strike Park.  CERT training is beginning this Saturday.  No pre-registration required.  Men About Town Fashion Show on October 4, 2006 at Oakmont Country Club. 

Oktoberfest Mixer is coming up.  Oktoberfest is on October 7, 2006.  Noon to 11 p.m.

Chimes Tour at St. Lukes – Sept. 23, 2006, 9:30 a.m.  Next CV Heritage meeting will be on Sept. 25, 2006, and will discuss the proposed Mountain Oaks development.  CV Community Home Tour will be Sat. October 14, 2006.  Tickets can be purchased at CV Chamber.         

Announced upcoming programs and events.

Thursday October 21, Brownies will be joining their grandparents to plant flowers in the Senior Garden.

County has an ordinance that trash bins must go back before 8 p.m. on trash pick-up day.  Health Services Dept can be (626)430-5540.  BFI phone number 888-742-5234.  Mina Beyt asks about combining of all trash and recycling. 

 6.  Public Comments

Elliot Barkan candidate for 59th Assembly District.  Seeks community support.

Robert Sloan President of Foothill Municipal Water District.  Is up for re-election and seeks support.

Bill Nicoll – Treasurer of Glendale Alliance, Political Action Committee.  Trying to get out the vote.  Website at www.GlendaleAlliance.org. 

David Meyers – is organizer of Friends of Mountain Oaks which is opposing the proposed Mountain Oak development.  Website www.friendsofmountainoaks.org.  Sherri Stubbs asked about property owners.

7.  CVTC Committee Reports

One candidate has applied to date.  Others have contacted us to inquire about elections.  Applications are due Oct. 15, 2006. 

Silent auction raised over $2,100.  Grandview fundraiser: $110.00  Dominicks fundraiser: $127.00

Full meeting is being planned in middle of October.  Will report back to Council at end of month.

Two projects in Montrose seeking CUP.  One 8-unit and one  4-unit buildings.  Second week of October we hope to have meeting to discuss the two projects.

Yesterday and last week Committee interviewed artist finalists for upcoming library.  It was a difficult decision based upon the extremely talented group of artists in this area   There will be a Primary and Secondary artist chosen.  County will make a press release regarding its choice.  Art budget is $72,400.  Artists concepts will be due early November.  County has said there may be some aesthetic changes to design that is currently on the website.  Richard Toyon has submitted some recommendations. 

Two pretzel booths and an ID booth.  Seeking sign-ups of councilmembers to contribute. 

Thank the papers for what they have done.  E-mail was received for Worley and Rawlins eagle court of honor on Oct. 7, 2004 11:00 to 1:00 p.m.

CV Methodist Church has announced the new appointment of the Rev. Paige Eaves as its new pastor. 

Working on getting curbs, which are for water control in the Pineglen area, painted or otherwise marked.  We have had residents tripping and hurting themselves.  Councilmember Andrus has been a great help in this process by bringing it to our attention and surveying neighbors in the area regarding solution.  Thanks to Steve Pierce for putting so much time into planting of the palm tree in 2-Strike Park.  Steve Pierce mentions an issue which we are going to be involved with dealing with traffic/pedestrian congestion near Mountain Ave. Elementary School and Ocean View Avenue.

CVCAN will be meeting at CV High School at 3:15 p.m. , Sept. 27, 2006.

CCY Senior Programs are upcoming and flyers are available.

Motion by Councilmember Thomas to write letter to County to move as quick as possibly to reach a compromise with the community so that we can lift the CUP permit requirement.  Seconded.  Approved unanimously.
