MINUTES

 

1. Call to Order President Rawlins

Councilmembers present: Beatty, Erickson, Gilden, Hales, LaJoice, Lunt, Ostler, Adelman, President Rawlins

2. Scholarship - Matthew Klint, one of the CVTC scholarship recipients, was present to accept his award.

3. Neighbor of the Month Award Presented by Councilmember Gilden

Harout Kioudjian, jewelry designer who has donated to CVTC pieces of jewelry, including a replica of the Eagle ring he created for Governor Arnold Swarzenegger.

Crescenta Valley Water District

David Gould, District Engineer, and Christy Ariey, Program Specialist

In an effort to keep customers informed of water supply levels and maximize water conserving potential, CVWD will initiate a Water Conservation Alert System on June 25, 2004. The color-coded Alert System will be displayed on a flag and a sign at the District’s main office and on the CVWD website at www.cvwd.com. Signs will also be displayed at various locations throughout the community. Citizens are encouraged to implement voluntary water conservation measures.

Los Angeles County Fire Department

John Todd, Assistant Chief Forester; Lorrine Lopez, Community Service Representative; Richard Anderson, Brush Clearance Coordinator for our area.

They presented a variety of measures for brush clearance: clear vegetation up to 200 feet from structures; weed whip grasses and weeds, eliminate dead material in shrubs, brush and trees; prune all vegetation 1/3 their height or 6 feet, whichever is less; keep roofs clean; keep vegetation cleared at least ten feet from chimney outlets; store firewood at least 30 feet from structures; keep a 3-foot clearance around fire hydrants; landscaping should be broken up horizontally and vertically (keep limbs trimmed up high from ground). Currently our moisture level is low.

8. Public Comments

Mr. Lynn McGinnis, Rosemont Middle School history instructor, invited the community to accompany Rosemont eighth grade students on a Freedom History tour to the Washington D.C. area next year. Fundraisers for this trip include an annual golf tournament in October and rummage sale/pancake breakfast in November.

President Rawlins presented a flyer soliciting support to save the Verdugo Hills Golf Course. A motion was made for CVTC to send a letter to L.A. City Council expressing support to preserve the golf course. Motion was approved, 6-2. Individuals may write to :

9. Comments from Officials

Pocket motorcycles are not legal on public streets; if a vehicle is registered through DMV it is considered legal. Motorized vehicles and bicycles may not be operated on sidewalks. Councilmember Lunt asked how many collisions are DUI related. Answer: very few on surface streets.

  1. Committee Reports

A left turn signal will be installed southbound on Pennsylvania Avenue at Foothill Boulevard. Curbs on Ramsdell and Cloud Avenues will receive additional red paint. A feasibility study will be conducted for the crosswalk at Community and Cloud; a recommendation will be presented at the next CVTC meeting. During Fall 2004 speed counts will be taken on streets close to schools.

In response to community inquiries, Councilmember Hales will ask Councilmember Raghavachary to provide a report to CVTC as to the status of the Community Standards District.

On-line bidding for the CVTC silent auction will begin on June 18 and conclude at 11:00 p.m. on July 3, 2004. Live bidding will continue on July 4 until the beginning of the fireworks show at CV High School. A discussion followed of a price for the beginning bid of the Swarzenegger ring. President Rawlins decided that the Fundraising Committee should make the final decision. Tables for the CVTC booth on July 4 should be delivered by 1:00, and baked goods are solicited.
