August 19, 2004

MINUTES

 

1. Call to Order                                                                         President Rawlins at 7:05pm

Councilmembers present: Adelman, Gilden, Lunt, Raghavachary, Smiley, President Rawlins, Andrus.

 

2.  Neighbor of the Month Awards                                          Vice President Adelman and President Rawlins

 

   Alan Eberhart received the award for his outstanding community service.

 

3.  Business

   President Rawlins announced his appointment of Grace Andrus as the third alternate to fill the vacancy left by David Drucker.  Councilmember Lunt moved that Andrus be confirmed by the Council as the third alternate. Councilmember Gilden seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously, and Councilmember Andrus was sworn into office by Councilmember Lunt.

   Councilmember Raghavachary moved that a new committee named “Trails of Crescenta Valley” be formed per the request of community members at the July meeting. Councilmember Smiley seconded the motion. The motion passed. President Rawlins appointed Councilmember Beatty to chair the committee.

 

4. Correspondence                                                                  Councilmember Lunt

   Thank you letters were received from the CV Chamber and the Community Service Learning Project. An e-mail was received requesting information about what may be done to get rid of cars parking of Foothill Blvd. with for sale signs in the windows.  President Rawlins received a letter regarding the parking of boats on public streets. Councilmember Raghavachary will follow up on these issues.

 

5. Report from Treasurer                                                           No report this month.

 

6. Approval of Minutes of July 15, 2004 CVTC Meeting: President Rawlins moved to approve the minutes. Councilmember Raghavachary seconded the motion. The motion passed.

8. Comments from Officials

 

    California Highway Patrol: They have an open house planned for September 11, 2004 at their Alta Dena Station from 10-2pm.  There were 18 collisions in July.

 

   Sheriff’s Department: Captain Peters presented the crime statistics for the month of July. He also clarified that if the ½ cent sales tax issue passes in November, there will be approximately $44.8 million dollars earmarked for the unincorporated areas.  Our station’s wish list includes increasing the hours of their mountain car from 16 to 24 hours of patrol a day. They also wish to add an additional car, add additional 10 deputies, and restore the positions of a sergeant, a community service officer, and a deputy for the volunteers. Their annual rummage sale is August 28th.

The new children’s librarian will attend out next meeting to introduce himself.

 

 Supervisor Antonovich’s Office                                   Rita Hadjimanoukian

   

The Supervisor is beginning his Not Even For A Minute campaign to increase public awareness of the danger of keeping children in car seats when the adult is not in the car. The sex offender website will soon be up and running at LACounty.info. The All For the Love of Kids event for foster children will be held on September 23rd.

October 4th is Octoberfest, and the Foothills Community Expo 2004 will be on Wednesday, Sept. 8 from 5-8 p.m at Verdugo Hills Hospital .

 

Historical Society                                                          Mike Lawler

 

Their September 20th meeting will feature Robert Marshall presenting “ Resisting Nazi Propaganda.” The meeting is at the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science at 7:00pm. The Historical Society is also pursuing putting historical markers or plaques in Montrose to commemorate Flag Week, at the painting in La Crescenta Elementary School by Seymore Thomas, at Dunsmore Park , at the golf course, and in a few other locations.

The bracelet that did not sell on July 4 did not sell on E-bay, but will be put up for auction again as Christmas approaches. The candidates filing form is available on our website. The deadline for filing is October 14th.

 

Streets, Roads and Parks                                            President Rawlins

 

The stoplight on Pennsylvania and Altura will be working soon.

 

Foothill Design/Planning                                               Councilmember Raghavachary

 

The Foothill Design committee presented the draft CSD at the August executive meeting. Councilmember Lunt moved that the Foothill Design Committee take the next steps needed to get the CSD in place (meeting with Sup. Antonovich’s office to see what additional steps are needed). Councilmember Gilden seconded the motion. The motion passed. Also, the spot park at Briggs and Foothill will take some additional work. 

 

Community Outreach                                                     Councilmembers Smiley and Gilden

 

Their next meeting is August 26th at 7pm at the Sheriff’s station. Their goal is to increase voter turnout for our November election.

 

Library                                                                        Councilmembers Raghavachary and Andrus

 

A library committee meeting was held last week. They will be meeting monthly in Pasadena . Councilmember Smiley moved that the Town Council write a letter to Supervisor Antonovich requesting a meeting with the Supervisor to discuss land acquisition, and their timeline/action plan for acquiring land for the library. Councilmember Gilden seconded the motion. The motion passed.

 

10. Items from Council

Councilmember Lunt announced the elections will be held on Saturday, November 6th, from 9-5pm at the Sheriff’s Station. Candidate filing forms are available, and due October 14th. 

 

President Rawlins moved to make a $200 donation to the Clark students who built the robot for India . Councilmember Adelman seconded the motion. After much discussion, the motion was amended to make a donation of $100. Councilmember Raghavachary seconded the motion. The motion passed.

 

11. Announcements

 

The date of the CVTC Executive Meeting will be changed to Monday, September 13th, at President Rawlins’ home at 7pm.
