The C.V. Town Council has recognized the brave men and women from our area who are currently serving in the Armed Forces with Banners along Foothill Blvd.  Currently, 38 Home Town Hero Banners have been placed.

CPL Danel M Barolet, US Marine Corps, graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2003 and left for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot the following week.  Daniel has servered one seven month deployment to Iraq taking over base security operations for Al Asad Air Base in the Al Anbar Province.  Daniel is now with the 3rd Anglico in Long Beach where they prepare for future combat operations.


LT Amy Bryer, US Navy, ran track for Crescenta Valley High School from 1983-1984.  Education and family as always been important to her.  She graduated from Columbia University.  Becoming a dentist enabled Amy to help military personnell and children in various countries stay healthy.  This amazing woman always goes the extra mile for family and work.

A1C Matthew Cameron, USAF, graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2004. He is stationed at Tinker AFB, OK and flies on AWACS as a Communications Technician. He recently deployed to UAE and flew missions in support of both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is married and has a baby girl who was born in December 2007.


SGT Amber Caplette, US Army, 1999 graduate of Crescenta Valley High School.  Enlisted January 2004, stationed in Texas and works in Military Intelligence.  Spent a year at the DLI in Monterey, CA and stationed in South Korea for a year.  Deployed to Iraq November 2007.


Michael Conover, Crescenta Valley High School grad, 1987, 1991 Graduated from USNA with a BS in Mathematics, 1992-1994 AAV Plt Cdr with B Co 3rd AABN (Deployed to Somalia for Op RESTORE HOPE 92-93 and Okinawa, Japan as a part of the 31st MEU 93-94), 1994-96 Flight School in Pensacola Florida.  Winged Mar 1, 1996 as an AH-1W Super Cobra pilot, 1996-2000 AH-1W pilot with HMLA-169 (2 Unit Deployment Program (UDPs) to Okinawa), 2000-2002 AH-1W Instructor pilot with HMT-303, 2002-2003 Commanding Officer of the Personnel Administrative Support Detachment (PASD) of MAG-39 (now called Headquarters Squadron MAG-39), 2003-2005 AH-1W Night Systems Instructor (NSI), S-1 and Operations Officer at HMLA-267, 2005 AH-1W pilot deployed to Okinawa and the 31st MEU as a part of HMH-262(REIN), 2005-2006 Rejoined HMLA-267 as AH-1W pilot and S-1 Officer.  In 2006 he moved to Okinawa, Japan and assigned to the III MEF Special Operations Training Group (SOTG) as the Branch Head of the Amphibious Raid Branch with his primary mission supporting the training and evaluation of the 31st MEU, sending out 20-25 man detachments to teach Non-Lethal Weapons tactics, techniques and procedures, Small Boat Operations, Convoy Operations and Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques (HRST) to name only a few.


LCDR Mitchell Conover, US Navy, graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1990.   Attended US Naval Academy, graduated with a BS Aerospace Engineering.  Commissioned as an Ensign in US Navy, May 1994.  Earned Naval Aviator Wings in November 1996, piloted the FA-18 Hornet.   Completed FA-18 Training at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, CA, he served an operational tour in VFA-97 “Warhawks” based in Lemoore, CA.  Cruised aboard the U.S.S. Carl Vinson and participated in Operations Southern Watch and Desert Fox.   July of 2001, reported to US Naval Test Pilot School at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, MD, graduated class 121 in June 2002.  Reported to VX-31 Test Squadron, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, CA and served as the Anti-Radiation Missile Project Officer.  Returned to VFA-97 for a training officer tour to participate in the first Navy Tactical Air Integration Unit Deployment Program to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.  Now back at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, MD serving as the Chief Engineer for Precision Guided Bombs and Ancillary Equipment for all Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. 


Spc. Richard M. Clark, age 20, US Army, graduated Crescenta Valley High School, June 2005.  Attended bootcamp at Fort Benning, Georgia in July 2005.  Duty Station is Fort Carson, Colorado, 2nd Infantry/12th Battalion, married Keshia Clark in Colorado in Sept. 2006, deployment to Iraq Oct. 2006 – Camp Falcon


SSgt Brandon Cruz, USAF, graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2000. He joined the Air Force in January 2001 and was first stationed at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas as an Aircraft Guidance and Control technician on the C-130 airframe. In 2004, he cross-trained into the Computer Operations career field and is currently stationed at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. From 2005-2006 he led a team supporting the AWACS aircraft through a specialized deployable mainframe. SSgt Cruz is currently supporting 552d Air Control Wing leadership as Non-Commissioned Officer in protocol as well as provides Distinguished Visitor tour assistance. He live with is wife Chelsea and their dog Carmen. Brandon’s family still resides in the La Crescenta area.


Chief Petty Officer Brian M. Curry, attended La Crescenta Elementary, Rosemont Jr. High, and Crescenta Valley High School, graduating June 14, 1984.  He entered Bootcamp in 1985 with his Duty Station at  Camp Pendleton.  He was Deployed to Iraq 2007.


Sgt Jeff Daida, US Marine Corps, graduated Crescenta Valley High School in 1999 and Glendale Community College, AS in Fire Technology, Marine Reserves from June 2000 to 2006.  Re-enlisted for 4 more years.  Duty station:  Camp Lejune Air Station, NC. Deployments:  3 tours in Iraq.


Lt. Junior Grade Davis, Steven, I., US Navy;  Schools:  La Canada High graduate-June 1998, UC San Diego, 2002 BSEE, USN OCS, Pensacola, Fl. – Aug 2005; Promoted LTJG – July 2007; Duty Station:  Norfolk, VA; Deployment:  Bahrain, May 2006 to May 2008


Lance Corporal Michael Fechter, USMC, is a CH-53 Echo Helicopter Airframe Mechanic at Edwards Air Force Base serving with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 769 (HMH-769). Michael is a 2004 graduate of Crescenta Valley High School.

PFC Joshua Gomez, pic of Basic Infantry Training graduation at Ft. Benning, GA in Jan 2006. Joshua is now serving in Ft. Lewis, WA. He's a 2003 Crescenta Valley High School graduate and joined the Army in 2005 with his football buddy and friend, Nick Steinbacher, deceased Dec. 10, 2006 in Baghdad.


PFC Jake Gossard, US Marine Corps Jake graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2006. Duty station is Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Ca, being trained to be a tank driver for the 1st Tank Battalion, Bravo Co, 3rd Platoon. He is scheduled for deployment in Sep. 2008.

2nd Lt. David Gottlieb, USAF, attended Crescenta Valley High School and graduated in 2000 where he served 4 years in the JROTC. He attended San Diego State University and received his BS in Political Science.  He and his wife, Caitlin, are stationed in Omaha, NB.  Currently David is an Electronic Weapons Officer and is deployed to Asia.

PFC Allen Harris is a 2002 graduate of Verdugo Hills High School and of Glendale Community College before joining the Marine Corps in February 2007. He will formally graduate on June 29, 2007 from Marine Recruit Depot San Diego, and PFC Harris continues to Camp Pendleton for Marine Combat Training before attending his MOS training in Twenty-nine Palms, California. His stepbrother, Joshua Gomez, is an active duty Army specialist and his family resides in Montrose.


Aren Knighton completed Basic at Ft. Benning Georgia and started Airborne Training there as well.  He made his third parachute jump and landed hard, breaking his leg.  He had surgery in Fort Benning to place three screws to secure the fracture and then had a month of leave at home to recover.  When he returned he was assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington where he was assigned to a Stryker's brigade as a gunner's assistant. 


Major Fred C. Koegler, III - U.S. Air Force


Tony Kuleto, US Navy, entered the Navy March 2000, graduated Special Operations Dive School in 2001.  Completed Navy EOD School in 2002.  Deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom I & II Basra and Baghdad. Currently assigned to Naval Special Clearance Team One, a unique flyaway contingency unit comprised of Navy SEALs, Navy EOD, and Marine Recon combat divers charged with covert reconnaissance and subsequent underwater mine and obstacle neutralization in hostile coastal environments.


Lance Corporal Michael Larsen, USMC, age 20. Graduated Crescenta Valley High School, Glendale Community College.  Graduated from  bootcamp MCRD: Feb. ‘05.  Assignment: helicopter navigation/weapons electronic systems technician, Duty Station is Camp Pendleton, CA.

Lance Corporal Robert Larsen, USMC, age 22.  Graduated Crescenta Valley High School, Glendale Community College.  Graduated from bootcamp MCRD: June ‘05.  Assignment: Rifleman.  Deployed to Iraq January - July 2006, Duty Station is Camp Pendleton, CA.

Unit: 1st Marine Div, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines 


Douglas Leach (aka D.J. Leach), US Navy gunner mate, age 23, is currently serving on the USS Chung-Hoon in Hawaii. A graduate from Crescenta Valley High School in 2002, D.J. was very active in ROTC at Crescenta Valley High and in the CVS Soccer Team. He attended Mountain Ave Elementary and Rosemont Junior High. He was very active with Crescenta Valley Sports Association (CSA) Baseball and AYSO Soccer. In 2007, he was deployed to the Arabian Gulf. We are very proud of him. May God protect and keep all of our service men and women safe.


 

Lt. Al Lim, US Coast Guard, Pilot, Duty Station:  Air Station New Orleans


Army Specialist Simone Luca graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2000, and UC San Diego in 2004.  Following graduation she attended Military Intelligence School at Fort Huachuca, AZ.  Currently Simone is serving in Camp Liberty, Bagdad, Iraq as an Intelligence Analyst.


 

Cpl. Travis Mason (aka Travis Young) graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2001. He lives in Montrose with his sister Tracy and nephew Connor. His parents are Mark and Debbie Young of La Crescenta.

Travis joined the Marines in January of 2002 after watching the devastation that happened on 9/11. He felt a calling to serve his Country and protect his family.

Travis was initially stationed in Pasadena and was deployed to Al Asad, Iraq with the 4th Air BN. in 2004. Travis is now stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in CA with CH-53 (HMH-769 Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron.

His family and friends area all very proud of Travis. He is a wonderful son, grandson, brother, uncle and friend. We wish him safety and protection as he continues his career with the service. Travis has made the decision to re-enlist January 2008. 


Gerald Norbut is a 1975 graduate of Crescenta Valley High School and Cal Poly Pomona with Masters degree from Geo Mason U. and Naval War College. He has 22 years with the Navy, currently serving at the UA Navy Support Facility in Diego.  At the beginning of the Iraq war he served with General Tommy Franks at the War Command Center in Qatar and Tampa, FL. 

Jerry married his high school classmate Doreen and has 2 sons, Kyle age 10 and Sean age 7.


 

1st Lt. Jeffery E. Primus, US Air Force, graduated Crescenta Valley High School in 1999, George Washington University in 2003, and attended the AFROTC at Howard University.  Trained in San Antonio, TX at Lackland AFB, received wings at Corpus Christi NAS, finished training at Little Rock AFB for the C130.  Assignment:  Pilot for the C130.  Duty Station is Yakota AFB, Japan

Deployments:  Ali Al Salem AFB, Kuwait 


 

Captain Patrick Profeta graduated from Loyola High School of Los Angeles and is a 2003 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. Patrick earned his wings October 28, 2005 from Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma.

Patrick is an E-3 Sentry (AWACS) pilot stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with the 552nd Air Control Wing. Captain Profeta is currently deployed to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing in Southwest Asia and is flying reconnaissance missions in support of both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His family lives in La Crescenta. 


 

SPC Kyle E. Ranous, US Army, was born and raised in La Crescenta. He is the son of Patti Ranous of La Crescenta and Rick Ranous of Long Beach and grandson of Eugene and Eleanor Gustavson of Glendale and Bill and Betty Lou Ranous of Palm Desert. Kyle attended Lincoln Elementary School, Rosemont Middle School and graduated from Crescenta Valley High in 2005, where he was was active in track and football. He obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in 2005, Troop 319. He is currently stationed in Germany with a Stryker Brigade. 


Lance Corporal Michael Smirke, US Marine Corps, was born in Lake View Terrace and raised in La Crescenta for 16 years.  He is the son of Cheryl and Ronald Smirke, who just moved from La Crescenta to Sunland.  Michael attended Dunsmore and Lincoln Elementary Schools, Rosemont Middle School and graduated from Crescenta Valley High in 2006, where he was active in ROTC.  He obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in 2006 in Troop 319, and has been active with La Crescenta Presbyterian Church for many years.  He duty stationed is Camp Twentynine Palms, CA and is currently deployed in Iraq with a Scout/Sniper Platoon.  Michael has always wanted to be a Marine in order to give back to his country what it has given to him and to help those who can’t help themselves.  He has proven to be a blessing as a son, wonderful brother and good friend to many.


SPC Chris Van Meter, US Army, graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 2004. He entered the Army's Delayed Entry Program and after graduation, trained at Fort Jackson, SC.  His duty station is Fort Hood, TX.  Being deployed to Iraq in December, 2005, he has received challenge coins for work done and the ARCOM (Army's Commendation Metal).  He enjoys being a mechanic for the Army, which is what he and his father, William Van Meter, did while he was at home.  His family is very proud of him.


 

SPC Matt Vartan joined the United States Army in 2003. He is currently holding 3 jobs; mechanic as primary, fueler as secondary, and linguist for the third job. Matt graduated from CV High School in 1990 and from CSUN, in 1996. He lived in La Crescenta for 15 years and is currently stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
